I was sad to learn about...

What was most saddening to read about, was the erosion of equality readings, which eventually led to the talks of slavery in chapter 2 of our textbook(pages 70-76). Reading about different heirarchies for different aspects of society makes it easy to see how the world and economy run itself to this very day. Hunting societies and agricultural chiefdoms were able to sustain a high amount of products for people which led to the wealth piling up with them, rather than being spread around equally. That is something that still happens to this day in all kinds of different businesses. As the text goes on a social pyramid is almost is what comes to play and on all those pyramids is a base of slaves. Often when we think of slavery we think of the American Civil War. Before any of that was even relevant in the world, there seems to be evidence which points to the earliest hunter and agricultural societies having slaves do their work. This is obviously very saddening and infuriating. At a time when the precedent could have been set for all humanity, there was still greed or some kind of evilwhich ran some extent of the societies that existed in the early era's of humanity. I personally don't think slaves should exist under any circumstance so I was dissapointed this was a part of early humanity.

Unfortunately gender bias or heirarchy is something that existed in early humanity as well as it does today. Today we are seeing some improvment in things such as fair pay for all genders, but society still has a long way to go in terms if equality amongst genders. The newly found genders that exist today also add to the journe which society is on to achieve gender equality as well. It was sad to read about how early societies openly praised men superior to women. Although I will admit it isn't surprising based on what I have learned in other history courses. When women were pregnant boys were preferred over girls, and men were even allowed to have multiple sexual partners in some societies. Women were not allowed to comit adultery on their husbands, or they could be subject to death. Of course there are always situations that differ from the norm. For example families which owned slaves had women who were considered of higher class and often had tasks which differ from the common woman back in their respective era's. It was also kinda of weird to read how some societies replaced female goddesses with male masculine figures for the public. I'm not sure what caused the change but it surely makes no sense and this is what I found most sad about the reading and behaviors of unequal past societies.

  1. Hi Tony! So nice to "see" a familiar face! Hope you are doing well!

It is surely something to notice that even then the inequality started to build eh? I was really saddened to understand the reason. According to the book it was because women had to get pregnant and have children, so it automatically gave their social responsibilities to men. Which is hard for me to understand. During this time people lived in big groups, assuming elders lived with as well. Why did the woman let go entirely, affecting her status or title? The elders could have assumed the raising children responsibility allowing women to get back to work...I guess we will never know.
