Chapter 13

The experience of empire for conquered peoples was broadly similar whoever their rulers were. Does the material in this chapter support or challenge this idea?

The first evidence of support that conquered peoples had similar experiences to their conqueror's,  is when Strayer (pg.61-62) discusses how Europeans and their enslaved Africans brought their agriculture and diets to the America's as well disease. The Spanish brought Small Pox over which decimated large amounts of natives. So while positives such as agriculture and the growth of animal populations did come with Europeans migrating to the America's, as well as growing those industries among others in the America's, negative things like slavery and disease foreign to natives also came with the experience. So technically I would say this material does support that those who were conquered or invaded had similar experiences to their invaders.

Later in the chapter when Strayer discusses Russia conquering Siberia, an example of Empress Catherine the Great allowing a religious tolerance for Islam is discussed which is very different from what the Spaniards did in Latina America in converting many natives to the religion of Christianity. That being said, Siberia saw a major influx of Russian settlers, while also having their hunting grounds monopolized by Russian agricultural and pasture lands. This forced Siberia to become reliant on Russian resources of all kinds. Over time Russian incorporated Siberia into Russian States. This allowed both Siberia and Russia to grow into each other in my opinion. Siberians were willingly learning the Russian language as well as willingly covert to Christianity. So I would also consider this evidence as support that conquered peoples were experiencing similar life to their conquerors.

However when discussing Muslime rule of the Ottoman Empire, Strayer (p.577) discusses how the regional invasions did not affect those who were conquered as much as the examples above. The Ottoman Empire developed a true cross cultural empire and some of the devastation seen in other parts of the world who were conquered did not happen in the Ottoman Empire.
