Final Presentation

To the citizens of the United States,

As I write this letter, our country is in shambles. This is not entirely due to the pandemic of COVID-19. Police brutality and injustices are being caught on camera more than ever and the people of this country have had enough. We are, unfortunately, dividing ourselves with the aid of powers much higher than the average civilian. The division of race and equality has been a major issue. The division of the people versus the police officers has been worsening for the last few decades. We are now at a boiling point and it is more than understandable at this point. My reason for writing this letter is simply to inform the citizens of a few key historical stories which enabled the racial and social inequality that still is in America to this very day. We will learn that the Americas’ were victims of greed and power hungry elites.

As early as 2000 BC, we have evidence of class and gender hierarchies, wealth accumulation by specific groups, and even slavery in Mesopotamian society. The first civilizations of the world made their livings on hunter gatherer societies. The hunter gatherers were able to accumulate wealth because of the resources hunting and gathering brought societies. Food, gathering of herbs and plants, eventual domestication of animals and agricultural advances allowed these members of society to gain wealth and control. Gender inequality had also existed in Ancient societies. Baby boys were preferred over baby girls. Men of power or no power were allowed to have multiple sexual partners, while adultery committed by a woman was punishable by death in some societies. Classes were also not exempt from inequality. Mesopotamian societies would be conquered and forced labor was born. Women slaves would work for weaving enterprises while men slaves worked in irrigation canals. It is very important to understand that these social injustices were happening literally as far back as we know time to go and the idea of accumulating wealth and power.

Fast forward to second wave civilization around 500 BC, and Rome was also guilty of the social inequalities and slavery we saw back with Mesopotamian societies. When we think of Rome often we think of the Colosseum and gladiators. I ask you what were gladiators in terms of their social class? The answer is slaves. Gladiators were owned and forced to fight in the Colosseum. Now it is very important to note that not all gladiator battles were til death. Most actually were with pity, where the matches ended when there was a clear loser. That being said slavery existed and was the center of attraction. Gladiators who were very successful were eventually granted freedom as they almost became celebrities for winning matches. Other slaves in Rome were used as forced labor to support Rome’s infrastructure and economics. This made the slaves key for not only the Republic but later on the Empire. Slaves who were common people were only emancipated for old age, purchased freedom or religious reasons. We now see advancements of using these social injustices for entertainment and labor to support a growing infrastructure where the slaves build for the elite leaders.

Now we jump to 1500, the year the Atlantic Slave trade began its century plus long of over 10 million African citizens from their home to all over Europe, Arabia and the Americas. What we learn in the history books is “the Europeans” were the ones who made deals with obvious corrupt African leaders to start this massive slave trade which changed the world forever. I challenge anyone reading this letter to ask the question of exactly who are “the Europeans”. As we learned in my second paragraph, accumulation of wealth and power played a role in class inequalities. I challenge you to ask who are these elite families who made these deals with African leaders? Another issue with the Europeans and Africans coming in contact with Native Americans, was the carrying over of disease that was not ever seen by Native Americans. This wiped out so many natives and changed the Americas forever. Although we were able to see the beginning of abolishing slavery around 1800, it wasn’t until 1865 that here in America all were slaves. This obviously caused major tensions which are still seeing today. Unjust killing of men and women of color, police brutality of people of color, mass incarceration of people of color and much different prison sentences for people of color. I want to point out some very specific things about upcoming presidential candidate Joe Biden, that may make you think twice about actions versus words from him and his party.

Joe Biden has been in politics since his days in the Delaware senate starting in 1973. That is a total of 47 years in politics. 47 years in one profession is a very long time. I ask those reading this letter, is there a reason Joe Biden did not make a positive impact on racial inequality? 47 years is a very long time with no change. What would Joe Biden being president do for the racial inequality he has overseen in his 47 years of politics? Starting in 1981 Biden helped pass two bills which put a minimum sentence on drug offenses into play. We have to look a little deeper to see what the impact of minimum sentences for drug offenses. First off in 2020, there are more than a handful of states which have decriminalized recreational marijuana. I would like to emphasize there is a MASSIVE DIFFERENCE in recreational marijuana and illegally distributing large amounts of marijuana. Why is marijuana still treated as a schedule 1 Federal drug? Eating meat kills more people than marijuana does, yet a large amount of drug offenses are non violent marijuana offenses. So Mr. Biden, it seems that these bills that you helped pass were flawed. Biden led the way for the 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement act. Many of the new politicians such as Jeremy Haile of the Federal Advocacy Counsel, are not shy about voicing that Democrats need to address this bill as a major mistake. In 1977 Biden referred to the desegregation of schools as a bad thing. Biden was quoted as saying he does not want his kids growing up “in a racial jungle with tensions having built so high that it is going to explode at some point”. I would like to ask Mr. Biden if he was foreshadowing his 1994 crime bill? Because that Biden bill indeed raised tensions and it is quite sad that Biden won’t flat out admit the bill was flawed. Rather he makes excuses for why it made sense at the time.

My fellow Americans I would like to leave you with this, we need change. But we need the right change. Changing something just to do it makes no sense. Trump is not a president, he is a businessman. Kind of how Biden is not for social equality, he's for mass incarceration per his 94 Crime Bill. They do not help the minority community, they built a system in which African Americans make up 6 million or 35% of the correctional population. Let's not forget who was on which side of the Civil War. With the news of Ghislane Maxwell being caught, I believe we will learn which politicians are righteous and evil. I think we will also be shocked to learn of the child slavery which is completely covered up by mainstream media and still goes on today by elite families, politicians and stars of Hollywood. My fellow citizens I urge you to do research and pay close attention to what these parties are doing to help themselves for your vote, versus their actions of the past and present. Thank you for reading.

Kind regards,

Tony Oropeza

  2. Hi Tony,

This is a very throughout and detailed letter. I like how you brought up history from the beginning of human existence. The integration of the history class and book really showed in this. This was a cool way of putting the whole world history summer course in a summery but put it into perspective into current events. Hope all is well and wishing you nothing but success bro. Be safe, take care, and see you in the Spring for grad!
